MIMA June Event: The Future of Connected Cities
Nigel Jacob / Co-Founder / New Urban Mechanics, City of Boston
Scaling innovation to meet the needs of modern citizens
We’re living in an increasingly connected world. We’ve got Nike FuelBands measuring our every move, white men are wearing Google Glass, plants telling us when they need to get watered, and diapers telling us when they’ve been, uh, watered. But while personal technology adapts to meet our changing lifestyles, are our environments doing the same?
It depends on where you live.
Nigel Jacob is the co-founder of New Urban Mechanics at City of Boston’s, and the work of Nigel and his group has earned Boston the reputation of one of the nation’s leading connected cities. Nigel and his group have focused their attentions not on digitizing enterprise back-end solutions, but rather on user experience for Boston’s citizens. They've scaled their efforts by focusing on micro-projects of $10,000 or less, none more successful than their maintenance-request app, Citizens Connect, which as been dowloaded more than 16,000 times and replicated in more than 20 countries.
For this discussion, Nigel will discuss large-scale innovation and the processes and tools involved, changes in how people and society interact with technology over time, how to connect cities and large groups of people and technology and communications, and the values and characteristics inherent to communications mediums.
If your job involves large-scale social initiatives, crowd-sourcing, interacting with big data, or you’re just interested in hearing from one of pioneers of building the cities of the future, register now, and join us on June 19, 2013 from 5:30-7:00 PM.
