Position Overview
As a member of the Carlson School's Communications Group, the Manager of Electronic Communications is responsible for directing the design and development of the internal and external Carlson School Websites and providing advice and counsel to internal clients relative to their use of the Carlson School sites as well as other electronic communications and social media. In addition, this position will be responsible for managing all staff within the Electronic Communications function, preparing and managing the function's annual budget, and working to ensure consistent execution of the Carlson School's mission and brand. This position will work closely with the Director of Strategic Communications, department peers, client contacts, and outside vendors to support the production of high-quality, mission-focused materials.  
 
Primary Responsibilities
1.     Strategic Direction for Carlson School electronic communications (40%): Create and maintain a strategic platform that serves as a guide for all of the School’s electronic communications. As a collaborative leader, this position acts as both adviser and innovator for the direction of the School's website communication function and vision. This role will act as the primary adviser to the Director of Strategic Communications and the School's leadership in matters of web communication, electronic communication and social media and the School's future strategies. Such a role will seek to research emerging technologies and address the myriad communications needs of the School while also addressing the diverse needs and interests of the School's many audiences.
 
2.    Project management and client service (30%): Advise clients across the Carlson School about their website integrative options, while overseeing and maintaining the integrity and strategic direction of the website communication vision for the School as a whole. Manage client communications and expectations while ensuring that the School's standard protocols and brand are being followed. Make client presentations and collaboratively make decisions that are in the best interest of the School's communication strategy and the client. Maintain close, productive relationship with the School’s I.T. department. Observe department norms for quality, accuracy, responsiveness, and overall customer service. This position is also responsible for fiscally responsible management of budget expenses related to web communications and to work in collaboration with the Director of Strategic Communications to do annual budget projections for the Electronic Communications team.
 
3.    Communications Management Team (10%): Serve on the Communications Group's Management Team. Actively share information gleaned from Electronic Communications activities with other members of the Management Team and openly support the importance of integrating all functional areas within the Communications Group.
 
4.    Staff Management (15%): Monitor workloads of the Electronic communications staff, determine the need for outsourcing projects to external vendors, assist in addressing the individual personnel needs and issues of Client Service staff, practice and support established accounting and personnel policies and procedures of the Carlson School of Management.
 
5.    Brand stewardship (5%): Ensure that the Carlson School visual identity, style guide, and brand voice are consistently and strategically applied in all marketing materials. Serve as an advocate for the proper management of the Carlson School brands across the School's various programs, academic departments, and centers. Coach internal customers and external creative vendors on brand principles, where appropriate.  
 
Required qualifications  
·         Bachelors degree in Web development, computer science, interactive design, communications, or related field.
 
·         Minimum three years of client service experience.
 
·         Minimum of one year of supervisory experience.
 
·         Strong demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
 
 
 
 

Preferred Qualifications
·         Served in similar role at the University of Minnesota, another college or university, or other complex non-profit organization.
 
·         Prior experience working with the University Relations design guidelines.
 
·         Minimum of three years of professional experience in Web development and/or design.
 
·         Ten or more years of professional business experience.
 
·         Demonstrated strong experience working in a leadership role, motivating, developing and leading teams.
 
·         A demonstrated understanding of strategic communication, the array of marketing tools, and the role of interactive marketing.
 
·         Self-directed, with a customer service orientation and the ability to manage multiple projects.
 
·         Demonstrated creative problem-solving skills
 
·         Flexibility and the abilities to work both in a team environment and independently.
 
·         Complementary abilities to prioritize and take direction
 
·         A portfolio of recently-completed websites demonstrating skills in the areas listed below:
o   Some experience in web programming and HTML, CSS and Jquery. Demonstrated skills in web development, coding, information architecture, or maintenance of web sites.
o   Demonstrated ability to work with clients, provide counsel, and manage expectations
o   Experience using content management applications such as Adobe Contribute and Oracle WCM, and designing web page templates and library items that are compliant with such systems.
o   Graphic design experience, including knowledge of Adobe Photoshop.
o   Knowledge of and appreciation for graphic identity standards and web navigation
logic / information architecture.
o   Experience with W3C and Section 508 standards and guidelines for developing and validating accessible web pages.
o   High-level of experience with Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office products.
o   Very familiar with Adobe Dreamweaver as a site and page management tool.  
o   Experience using Word Press, movable type or other blogging tools. 
o   Experience working with other social media tools.
